Model 5898 Portable 200A Precision Micro-Ohmmeter

The Tinsley 5898 is a highly accurate, mains or battery-powered portable 200A micro-ohmmeter designed for precise low-resistance measurements in both laboratory and field environments. Utilising a four-terminal measurement technique to eliminate lead resistance effects, it achieves a basic accuracy of 0.2% across a wide measurement range from 0.1 µΩ to 6 Ω. The instrument features six selectable ranges, each offering high or low current options (except the lowest range fixed at 200A), with selectable positive or negative current and automatic reversal to minimise thermal EMF errors. Its pulsed 200A test current operates at approximately 10% duty cycle, with continuous display of measured values.

Powered by two internal rechargeable sealed lead-acid batteries, the unit provides up to 8 hours of field operation, supported by a built-in charger compatible with 115V or 230V mains supplies and clear charge status indicators. A standard RS232 interface enables data printing or downloading stored measurements. The 4-digit, 6000-count LED display offers high visibility with 20mm digits and a resolution of 0.015% of full scale. Housed in a rugged, sealed ABS case (460 × 380 × 160 mm) and weighing approximately 20 kg, the Tinsley 5898 is built for durability. Each unit is supplied with a Tinsley in-house calibration certificate traceable to National Standards via NPL.

Measurement principle

A four terminal measurement principle to eliminate lead resistance. The 200A current is pulsed with a duty cycle of approximately 10%. Measurement value displayed continuously.

Power supplies

Two internal, re-chargeable, sealed, lead acid batteries are fitted for external 200A test resistance current and internal measurement supply circuits. Two charge indicators show the state of charge. The built-in battery charger has a front panel mains input supply for 115v or 230V supply with fuses.

Digital display

A 4 digit 6000 count display provides resolution to 0.015% of full scale reading in a bright daylight viewing 20mm high LED display.

Mechanical

A rugged, portable sealed ABS case, coloured grey. Size 460 x 380 x 160 mm. Net Weight Approx 20kg.
